George Raveling

George Raveling

George Raveling served as the Iowa men’s basketball coach from 1983-86, when he guided the Hawkeyes to two 20-win seasons and NCAA Tournament appearances.

While leading the program, Raveling recruited several high-caliber players like B.J. Armstrong (89BA), Kevin Gamble, Ed Horton, Roy Marble Jr. (91BA), and Greg Stokes (87BGS)—all of whom went on to play professionally. Several of Raveling’s recruits led Iowa’s run to the 1987 Elite Eight.

Raveling began his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater, Villanova (1963-69), and at Maryland (1970-72). As a head coach, Raveling guided Washington State (1972-83) to two NCAA Tournament appearances before moving to the Midwest in 1983. After coaching at Iowa, he led USC (1986-94) to two NCAA appearances. He also served as an assistant coach for the U.S. Olympic team in 1984 and 1988.

Raveling was the first Black coach in the ACC and PAC-8. He became part of history as a security volunteer at the March on Washington in 1963 when Martin Luther King Jr. handed him the original copy of the “I Have a Dream” speech, which Raveling later donated to Villanova.

Raveling was named Coach of the Year four times throughout his career, later being inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015. After retiring from coaching, Raveling—who had played a pivotal role in Nike signing a young Michael Jordan in the 1980s—became the shoe company's global basketball sports marketing director.

Raveling died Sept. 2 in Los Angeles. He was 88.
