Bowen D. Stassforth

Bowen D. Stassforth

An eight-time All-American, former world record holder, and medalist at the 1952 Olympics, Stassforth was one of the most celebrated swimmers in Iowa history.

The Los Angeles native served in the Navy during World War II, when a naval friend recommended he take his swimming talents to the UI. He went on to rewrite the Big Ten record books, and by 1952 held 16 national breaststroke marks. His swimming career culminated with a silver medal in the 200-meter breaststroke at that summer's Olympic Games in Helsinki. Charles Roeser, the chairman of the 1952 U.S. Olympic men's swimming committee, called Stassforth "America's greatest breaststroke champion, but more than that, a real American and gentleman whose conduct is a worthy example for others to follow."

Stassforth retired from swimming shortly after the Olympics and enjoyed a more than 50-year career with his family's insurance business in southern California.

Stassforth died Nov. 22, 2019, at his home in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. He was 93.

Chalmers "Bump" Elliott

Chalmers 'Bump' Elliott

A legendary Michigan football player and coach who became the longest-serving athletic director in Iowa history, Elliott guided the Hawkeyes to unprecedented heights in 21 years at the department's helm. Admired for his gentlemanly approach and keen eye for talent, Elliott hired Hayden Fry, Dan Gable, Lute Olson, and Tom Davis and ushered in a golden age of Hawkeye success.

Elliott inherited a UI athletics department in turmoil in 1970 following AD Forest Evashevski's resignation and the firing of football coach Ray Nagel. But Elliott steadily guided Iowa to national prominence. By the time he retired in 1991, his Hawkeye men's athletics teams had won 29 Big Ten titles, captured 11 NCAA wrestling championships, played in three Rose Bowls, and competed in basketball's Final Four and baseball's College World Series. Under Elliott and women's AD Christine Grant's watch, Iowa earned high marks for student-athlete success in the classroom, opened Carver-Hawkeye Arena, revived the football series with Iowa State, and enjoyed a near spotless record for NCAA compliance.

A charter member of the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame, Elliott is the only person to participate in the storied bowl game in five different capacities: as an All-American halfback with Michigan, assistant coach under Evashevski at Iowa, head coach of the Wolverines, associate AD at Michigan, and AD at Iowa. The Marine veteran was one of the few people as celebrated in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as he was in Iowa City. He was the Big Ten's MVP in 1947, with Wolverine coach Fritz Crisler calling him the greatest halfback he ever saw play. As head coach at Michigan from 1959 to 1969, his teams went 51-42-2.

Elliot was elected into the National College Football Hall of Fame in 1989 and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997. His son, Bobby Elliott (76BA), who died of cancer in 2017, followed in his father's footsteps by playing football at Iowa and serving as a Hawkeye assistant coach.

Bump Elliott died Dec. 7, 2019, at age 94.
