Over more than five decades at the University of Iowa, religious studies emeritus professor Jay Holstein taught tens of thousands of students and became one of the institution’s most beloved educators. Born in Philadelphia and raised in New York, Holstein started at Iowa as an assistant professor in 1970 and twice served as the J.J. Mallon Chair in Judaic Studies.
The ordained rabbi’s scholarship centered on the Hebrew Bible and Jewish experience. At Iowa, Holstein was known for his legendary lectures, which captured students’ attention through cultural references and humor. Word of Holstein’s dynamic and irreverent teaching style spread across campus fast and even passed through the generations. He regularly filled Macbride Auditorium, at times teaching more than 1,200 students annually. It is estimated that Holstein taught over 60,000 undergraduate students throughout his career.
Holstein’s unconventional contributions to the hearts and minds of UI students did not go unnoticed. Holstein received the President and Provost’s Award for Teaching Excellence and the Medallion for Distinguished Service. The university honored Holstein with a golden lecture in 2020, marking 50 years of teaching. Even after retiring in 2022, Holstein transitioned to teaching courses online.
At 87, he was teaching his popular Quest for Human Destiny course asynchronously this past fall before his death in Ames, Iowa, on Nov. 14. Ellen Davig Holstein (98MA), his friend and former wife, completed teaching the course in his memory. The many students taught by Holstein will never forget his legacy of inquiry, storytelling, and wit.
In honor of Holstein, donors may give to the Professor Jay Holstein Scholarship Legacy Fund , which has been established to provide support for student scholarships, faculty, and courses in the UI Department of Religious Studies.

Through his vision and influence over four decades, John W. Colloton (57MA, 13LHD) established University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics—now known as UI Health Care Medical Center—as one of the world’s premier medical centers.
Colloton was born on Feb. 20, 1931, in Mason City, Iowa. He enrolled at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, and graduated magna cum laude with a degree in 1953. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army. Two years later, Colloton used the GI Bill to pursue a master’s degree in hospital administration at Iowa.
He then started as an administrative assistant with University Hospitals and advanced to become the youngest person ever selected as the hospital director in 1971. During Colloton’s tenure, it’s estimated that 3 out of 5 Iowa families received care at or through UI Hospitals & Clinics.
After more than 20 years leading UI Hospitals & Clinics, Colloton stepped away from directorship in 1993 and became the UI vice president for statewide health services. Colloton served in this capacity until 2001, when he became director emeritus of UI Hospitals & Clinics.
Colloton’s leadership and legacy touched many areas of the university. He and his wife of 54 years, Mary Ann Hagglund Colloton (57BSN), who died in 2014, were generous donors to UI Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital, the UI College of Public Health, the Medical Education and Research Facility, Hancher Auditorium, and various men’s and women’s athletics programs, among others.
Colloton died Nov. 14 in Coralville. He was 94 years old.
