Carl Cain (56BA)

All-American Carl Cain (56BA) helped lead the Hawkeye men’s basketball program to the national title game as part of the “Fabulous Five.”

The Freeport, Illinois, native played for Iowa from 1954-56, during which the program reached back-to-back Final Fours in 1955 and 1956. The Hawkeyes became Big Ten runners-up in 1954 and won two regular season conference championships in 1955 and 1956. Under Coach Bucky O’Connor, the “Fabulous Five”—which also included Sharm Scheuerman (56BA), Bill Seaberg (60BBA), Bill Schoof (56BA), and Bill Logan (56BSC)—advanced to the 1956 NCAA championship game, where they lost to the undefeated defending national champions, the Bill Russell-led San Francisco Dons.

Following the 1956 season, Cain won a gold medal with the U.S. National Team in the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia. He also was selected as the 49th overall pick in the 1956 NBA draft by Rochester, and his No. 21 jersey is retired and hangs in the rafters of Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Cain died June 2, 2024, at age 89.
