Ernie Buresh (57LLB)

Ernie Buresh

Buresh’s humble beginnings inspired a lifelong commitment to helping others, including as an ardent supporter of his alma mater.

Raised during the Great Depression by struggling Iowa farmers who couldn’t afford new shoes for their children, Buresh graduated from the University of Iowa College of Law and became a successful businessman who gave much of his time and resources to nonprofits and charities.

A U.S. Army veteran, Buresh operated a feed business, Swisher Farm Supply, before transitioning from agriculture to banking—a field that had always intrigued him. He launched a more than five-decade banking career in eastern Iowa, owning banks in Anamosa, Cedar Rapids, Martelle, Onslow, Shueyville, Springville, and Tipton.

As two of the UI’s most generous supporters, Ernie and his wife, Joanne, established a family legacy of philanthropy by instilling the importance of giving back in their daughters, Sandra and Wendy (77MD). The Buresh family has provided support to many areas at Iowa including UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital, the College of Law, and Hawkeye athletics. Ernie was an avid Hawkeye fan and football ticketholder for nearly 40 years.

In 2012, the Bureshes received the Player Appreciation Award from the Iowa football team. The Bureshes first joined the I-Club—Hawkeye athletics’ recognition club for donors—in 1975, and the third floor of the Paul W. Brechler Press Box at Kinnick Stadium is named in honor of Sandra, who died in 2012.

Ernie also gave of his time. From 1972 to 1981, he served on the UI Foundation (now UI Center for Advancement) board of directors, and until his passing was a lifetime honorary director. He also served on various committees, including the Iowa Endowment 2000 campaign and the Medical Center Council executive committee.

Buresh died April 24 in Cedar Rapids. He was 95.

Jordan L. Cohen

Jordan L. Cohen

As the eighth dean of the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, Cohen made many significant faculty hires and oversaw the full implementation of the Doctor of Pharmacy program.

Cohen served as dean and professor from 1999 through 2007 and was also an emeritus faculty member in the pharmaceutical sciences and experimental therapeutics department. Following his deanship, he became the UI’s vice president of research from 2008 through 2012 and then served as a special assistant to the provost until 2014. In that role, he led the UI partnership with Kirkwood Community College and eight local school districts in creating a unique model for teaching science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to high school students at the Kirkwood Regional Center on the UI research campus.

A native of Milwaukee, Cohen received a BS in pharmacy in 1965 and a PhD in pharmaceutics and analytical chemistry in 1969 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He served as a faculty member at the University of Southern California from 1969 through 1988 with an active clinical pharmacology research program in cancer, AIDS, and geriatrics therapy. Cohen also served as dean of the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy for 11 years before joining the UI College of Pharmacy. While at Iowa, his research interests shifted to health care leadership in health sciences education and research.

A former president of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, Cohen served in many national pharmacy leadership roles and earned recognition for his achievements, including the UI College of Pharmacy’s Osterhaus Medal for Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.

Cohen died June 26 in Napa, California. He was 79.
