Brian M. Davis (67BS, 73MD)

A longtime Air Force physician and passionate Hawkeye, Davis dedicated his career to his country and his volunteerism to his alma mater, the University of Iowa.

The Webster City, Iowa, native graduated with honors in chemistry at the UI before attending medical school. After leaving Iowa City, Davis enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and completed a three-year residency training program in dermatology at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in Texas and as a fellowship in immunodermatology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.

Davis served 30 years in the Air Force as a general duty physician and flight surgeon, chief of dermatology, and hospital commander, among his many assignments at bases and military medical centers around the world. His academic appointments included stints as clinical instructor and assistant professor of medicine at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland, and chief consultant for dermatology to the USAF surgeon general. Upon retiring from the Air Force, he practiced general dermatology in San Antonio.

An ardent Hawkeye athletics fan and UI supporter, Davis was the longtime president of the San Antonio Iowa Club and in 2015 was named the UI Alumni Association's Iowa Club volunteer of the year. Davis also represented the university at college recruitment fairs hosted by local school districts.

Davis died at home in San Antonio on March 10, 2021, after a brief battle with cancer. He was 75.

Elaine M. Smith (88MBA)

A professor emerita of epidemiology in the University of Iowa College of Public Health, Smith conducted pivotal studies linking cervical cancer to human papillomavirus, or HPV.

Smith earned a PhD at the Roswell Park Memorial Institute at the State University of New York at Buffalo and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in cancer epidemiology at the University of Washington. She came to the UI in 1981, where she collaborated with colleagues in the Department of Pathology at the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine to study the molecular epidemiology of HPV infection in cancer of the uterine cervix.

Thanks in part to Smith's research, it's now understood that nearly all cases of cervical cancer are caused by infection with high-risk types of HPV. Her most important contribution was a series of studies starting in the 1990s that also linked HPV infection with a subset of cancers of the head and neck. HPV screening in head and neck cancer now is part of the routine diagnostic workup in clinical laboratories.

Smith died Jan. 21, 2021, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She was 75.
