Lawrence Dorr (65MS, 67MD)

Lawrence Dorr

For more than two decades, Operation Walk, an all-volunteer humanitarian organization, has performed hip and knee replacement surgeries at no cost around the world. Thanks to the vision of Dorr, the charity's founder, more than 17,000 people in need have received life-changing medical procedures.

Dorr's path to becoming a renowned orthopedic surgeon and humanitarian began in Iowa. A Storm Lake native, Dorr studied as an undergraduate at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, then the University of Iowa as a graduate student in pharmacology and medical school. He met his future wife, Marilyn, at The Airliner in Iowa City before serving as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps from 1967 to 1971. Dorr went on to become a leader in orthopedics, settling in the Los Angeles area where he specialized in many early developments in joint replacement surgery and published hundreds of peer-reviewed papers and books on the subject.

Dorr founded Operation Walk in 1996, recruiting teams of volunteer surgeons, doctors, nurses, and physical therapists for missions in the U.S. and medically underserved countries around the world. Under Dorr's leadership, Operation Walk grew into an international organization with 20 chapters in North America, Europe, and Asia. To date, its 20 teams have healed patients in 25 countries, while also training doctors and providing medical supplies.

Dorr had been a longtime supporter of the UI, including establishing the Dr. Lawrence and Marilyn Dorr Chair in Adult Reconstructive Surgery in 2000 in the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation. Among his many accolades were Distinguished Alumni Awards from the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine in 2006 and the university in 2009.

Dorr died Dec. 28, 2020, in Pasadena, California. He was 79.

Marvin Bell (63MFA)

Marvin Bell

A University of Iowa professor emeritus in literature and Iowa's first poet laureate, Bell is remembered for his restless imagination, his inventive and curious voice, and the wisdom he passed down to generations of students.

Bell was born in 1937 in New York to a family of immigrants from Ukraine. Raised in Long Island, Bell served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He earned a bachelor's degree from Alfred University, a master's degree from the University of Chicago, and an MFA from the Iowa Writers' Workshop. Bell settled in Iowa City and taught at the workshop for 40 years, retiring in 2005 as the Flannery O'Connor Professor of Letters. Among his students were future literary greats such as John Irving (67MFA), Rita Dove (77MFA), and Joy Harjo (78MFA).

Bell wrote more than 20 volumes of poetry, including Incarnate: The Collected Dead Man Poems (2019), Vertigo: The Living Dead Man Poems (2011), and Stars Which See, Stars Which Do Not See (1977), which was a finalist for the National Book Award in Poetry. Bell was elected as Iowa's first poet laureate in 2000 and held senior Fulbright appointments to Yugoslavia and Australia. In Iowa City, his poem titled "Writers in a Café" is inscribed on a prominent wall in the pedestrian mall and his name is immortalized on the Iowa Avenue Literary Walk.

"Poetry gave me a way to express everything at once," Bell once told The Iowa Review. "That is, it gave me a method by which to say more than words can say."

Bell, who wrote until his final days, died at home in Iowa City on Dec. 14, 2020. He was 83.
