Robert E. Yager (53MS, 57PhD)

Robert E. Yager

A visionary science education professor whose UI career spanned more than 50 years, Yager transformed classroom learning through his research and scholarship.

Yager, who penned more than 600 research papers, articles, and books, developed a teaching approach that encouraged science students to ask questions and explore their world. After finding that traditional teaching methods didn't hold students' attention, Yager's philosophy brought science to life while sparking creativity and critical thinking.

At the UI, Yager developed one of the largest graduate programs in science education in the U.S. and headed numerous national organizations, including the National Association for Research in Science Teaching and the National Science Teachers Association. Yager was presented with the UI's Distinguished Alumni Award for Achievement in 2009.

While he formally retired in 2006, Yager continued to support the UI through his philanthropy and served as professor emeritus with office hours until his death. Yager, of Coralville, Iowa, died Aug. 6, 2019, at age 89.
