Robert E. Yager (53MS, 57PhD)

Robert E. Yager

A visionary science education professor whose UI career spanned more than 50 years, Yager transformed classroom learning through his research and scholarship.

Yager, who penned more than 600 research papers, articles, and books, developed a teaching approach that encouraged science students to ask questions and explore their world. After finding that traditional teaching methods didn't hold students' attention, Yager's philosophy brought science to life while sparking creativity and critical thinking.

At the UI, Yager developed one of the largest graduate programs in science education in the U.S. and headed numerous national organizations, including the National Association for Research in Science Teaching and the National Science Teachers Association. Yager was presented with the UI's Distinguished Alumni Award for Achievement in 2009.

While he formally retired in 2006, Yager continued to support the UI through his philanthropy and served as professor emeritus with office hours until his death. Yager, of Coralville, Iowa, died Aug. 6, 2019, at age 89.

Caplan joined the UI medical faculty in 1961 and served in the college until 1997, including 22 years as associate dean for continuing medical education. He founded two programs that continue today in the Carver College of Medicine: Medical Education Community Orientation, which provides community hospital-based experiences for medical students following their first year of study, and the Program in Bioethics and Humanities, which helps health care professionals examine ethical questions.

Caplan authored hundreds of monthly essays for the Journal of the Iowa Medical Society and three books. He received numerous awards over the years, including the Hancher-Finkbine Medallion in 1992 and the College of Medicine's Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2011. Among Caplan's many philanthropic contributions to the UI, he and wife, Ellen (52BA, 69MA), established a medical student scholarship in their name. Beyond his professional work, Caplan was a lifelong musician, community theater actor, and author of a book of fiction and articles about Sherlock Holmes.

Jane Whitaker Mead

Jane Whitaker Mead (88MFA)

Mead was a widely-published poet, beloved teacher, and co-owner of an Iowa City bookstore who made her mark on the literary world after studying at the Iowa Writers' Workshop.

The Baltimore native earned her B.A. from Vassar College, M.A. from Syracuse University, and M.F.A. from the UI. She would go on to write a chapbook and five books of poetry, including World of Made and Unmade, which in 2016 was named to the National Book Award long list. Her latest career-spanning anthology, To the Wren: Collected and New Poems 1991-2019, was published in August by Alice James Books.

Mead divided her time between Napa, California, where she managed her family's ranch and vineyard, and Iowa City, where she was co-owner of the independent bookstore Prairie Lights. A poet-in-residence at Wake Forest University for many years, Mead also taught at Colby College, Southwest Texas State University, Washington University, New England College, and Drew University. In fall 2016, she was a visiting professor at the Iowa Writers' Workshop.

Mead died Sept. 8, 2019, at her home in Napa after a battle with cancer. She was 61.
