Sen. Dick Clark (56MA)

Sen. Dick Clark (56MA)

Clark used his U.S. Senate seat to shape American foreign policy in Africa to oppose apartheid and support newly independent nations.

Facing tough odds against Republican incumbent Jack Miller in Iowa's 1972 U.S. Senate race, Clark introduced himself to voters by taking a 1,300-mile walk across the state. His trek, which attracted significant media attention, won him the Senate seat 55-45.

During his term, the University of Iowa history grad served on the Senate Foreign Relations Commit tee as chair of its subcommittee on African affairs. In 1976, he sponsored the Clark Amendment, which banned U.S. aid to military groups in the Angolan Civil War, a Cold War proxy conflict between the U.S. and Soviet Union.

Though the Army veteran lost his bid for reelection in 1978, President Jimmy Carter appointed him as an ambassador-at-large for refugee affairs in the aftermath of the Vietnam War. In 1979, Clark left this position to work on Sen. Ted Kennedy’s 1980 presidential campaign. He later became a senior fellow at Aspen, a Washington think tank.

Clark died Sept. 20, 2023, in Washington. He was 95.

Linda Baker (68BA)

Linda Baker

A teacher at heart, Baker modeled a spirit of generosity that made a difference not only for her students, but for her alma mater.

Baker met her husband, Dale (68BBA), at the University of Iowa and graduated in 1968 with a degree in English and a certification in secondary education. Following graduation, the couple established a six-decade legacy of philanthropy to the university and have been among its most generous donors. The Bakers’ support has benefited the Henry B. Tippie College of Business and the Colleges of Education, Public Health, and Liberal Arts & Sciences, as well as women’s basketball, Hancher, and UI Libraries.

Linda created the Dr. Ken Magid Child Advocacy Scholarship in 2005 after she traveled to Romania on an alumni service-oriented trip. Volunteering at an orphanage there inspired her to create a scholarship for UI students to engage in similar service-learning experiences. Additionally, the Bakers championed the Linda R. Baker Teacher Leader Center and professional development and cultural learning opportunities for students in the College of Education.

Linda’s support extended beyond giving to the university. She served on the UI Alumni Association Board and the College of Education Advisory Board. She was also honored with the 2023 UI International Impact Award. Together, the Bakers received the UI’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2016.

Linda died Dec. 27, 2023, at age 77.

Craig Kletzing

Craig Kletzing

Kletzing combined a zeal for teaching with a decorated research career in space plasma experimental physics.

In nearly three decades at the University of Iowa, Kletzing was directly involved in 30 near-Earth or space missions. Most notable was a $115 million contract from NASA for the TRACERS mission, scheduled to launch in 2024, to study the interactions between the magnetic fields of the sun and Earth. The award is the single largest externally funded research project in UI history.

In addition to his research, Kletzing was invested in sharing his knowledge with students. As the inaugural holder of the Donald A. and Marie B. Gurnett Chair within his department, he taught 75 physics classes, from introductory courses for nonmajors to classes for graduate students. He was known for his in-class demonstrations: one involved former UI President Bruce Harreld riding a rocket-powered tricycle.

Kletzing died Aug. 10, 2023, in Iowa City. He was 65.
