Susan Thalheimer Strauss

Strauss was a patron of the arts known for her generosity throughout the University of Iowa and Iowa City community.

Originally from the East Coast, Strauss moved to Iowa City in 1978 when her husband, John, became chair of the UI Department of Dermatology—a position he held for 20 years. The couple quickly made Iowa City home and gave back to the community in many ways, including as major benefactors of dermatology and Hancher.

Passionate about theater, music, dance, and the visual arts, Susan Strauss supported Hancher programming and volunteered as a member of the Hancher Guild for decades. The Hancher greenroom is named after the Strauss family, as well as Strauss Hall—a venue for rehearsals and smaller performances. Strauss also supported the Iowa City Jazz Festival through Summer of the Arts.

Strauss died May 10 in Iowa City. She was 93.

Diane DeMarco

Whether through gymnastics or dance, DeMarco helped coach University of Iowa students to a mastery of movement.

DeMarco used her experiences as a 1975 Big Ten gymnastics champion for Michigan State and a high school coach in Boca Raton, Florida, as a launching pad to become the UI’s head women’s gymnastics coach in 1980. She stayed in that position for nearly 20 years, coaching 12 first team and five second team All-Big Ten honorees.

In 2006, DeMarco earned a national certification in ballroom dance instruction. She became UI director of recreational services in 2007 and taught numerous dance classes at Iowa through 2022. “One of the most rewarding things about teaching dance is watching someone evolve and transform,” the lifelong educator told Iowa Magazine in 2015. “Their confidence grows, and joy abounds throughout the entire process.”

DeMarco died May 14. She was 70.
