Donald Gurnett (62BSEE, 63MS, 65PhD)
Gurnett was a pioneering space scientist whose career as a student, professor, and researcher at the University of Iowa spanned more than 60 years.
Gurnett entered Iowa as a freshman in September 1957, the year the Russians launched the orbiting satellite Sputnik 1, ushering in the space age. Within a few months, he was working for James Van Allen (36MS, 39PhD), the famed UI physicist who discovered the harsh radiation environment around Earth that would bear his name. Gurnett earned an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering in 1962 and a doctoral degree in physics in 1965. He joined the UI faculty that same year.
When he retired in May 2019, Gurnett was celebrated for a litany of accomplishments that few—if any—will be able to match: He is considered by many the founder of the field of space plasma wave physics, and his discoveries include solving how auroras are created and the first detailed measure of radio emissions from the outer planets.
In all, Gurnett was part of 41 space missions and nearly two-thirds of the 67 spacecraft projects in which the UI has been involved. One mission always stood out to Gurnett: Voyager 1. The spacecraft, launched in 1977, was the second to visit Jupiter and Saturn. In 2012, Gurnett’s radio- and plasma-wave instrument onboard the craft confirmed that Voyager 1 had crossed the heliopause—the plasma boundary of the solar system—farther than any human-made object had ever traveled.
Gurnett died on Jan. 13, 2022, in Iowa City. He was 81.

Mark Reiland (92BA)
As both a national champion for the University of Iowa and as a longtime coach at Iowa City West High School, Reiland showed his dedication to the sport of wrestling.
Coached by his father, Marv, Reiland first wrestled for Eagle Grove High School in Eagle Grove, Iowa, where he earned two state championships. Reiland then competed for the UI in its 1988-92 seasons and, under coach Dan Gable, won an NCAA championship at 167 pounds in 1991. He was also a two-time All-American and a member of Iowa’s 1991 and 1992 national championship teams.
Reiland’s success as a wrestler was surpassed only by his success as a coach, first at Solon High School for two years and then at Iowa City West for another 18. In his time as West’s head wrestling coach, he led the Trojans to seven team state titles and 26 individual championships.
Although he retired from coaching in 2018, Reiland’s involvement with the sport was far from over—he served on USA Wrestling’s board of directors and executive committee, including as the organization’s first vice president. Reiland was inducted into the Glen Brand Hall of Fame in 2010, followed by the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2016. He was presented the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Lifetime Service Award in 2020 for his commitment to the sport.
Reiland died on Dec. 8 in Iowa City. He was 52.
