Roses flew from the press box, fans jumped around, and the Iowa student section joined the spirit squad in the end zone for pushups as the Hawkeyes clinched a trip to the 1982 Rose Bowl.

Scott Tilton (85BGS) remembers the moment vividly—a snapshot of the fan enthusiasm he helped amplify as an Iowa Sprit Squad member from 1980 to 1982. As president of the newly formed Iowa Spirit Squad affinity group, he wants to provide even greater opportunities for current and future Iowa cheerleaders, dance team members, and Herky mascots. The group aims to leverage the support of spirit squad alumni to mentor current members—and establish a practice facility, training staff, and scholarships.

Expanding awareness of the spirit squad is another priority for the group. "They're the unsung heroes out there," says Tilton. "They're doing phenomenal stunts and risking a lot just to bring enthusiasm to the crowd."
