In April 1954, the Iowa Alumni Review [Volume VII, No. 3], ran an article about the family and subsequent descendents of James Remley. In 1855, James enrolled his two oldest sons in the new State University of Iowa. Other children of his to enroll were Alice [1868BD, 1869BS, deceased], Milton [1867BA, 1872MA, deceased], and Howard M. Remley [1869BA, 1872LLB, 1873MA, deceased].

Remleys continued to enroll as the generations went on, with my great-grandfather Howard M. Remley, Jr. [1916BA, 1919LLB, deceased], my grandfather James E. Remley [1900BPH, 1901LLB, deceased], and my mother Lucille Remley Williams Sunleaf [46BA, 48MA, deceased]. Lucille's sister, Mary Cecelia Remley Wunder [34BA, deceased], and brother, James T. Remley [36BA, 39JD, deceased] also attended. My father, Lawrence B. Williams [45BA, 48MD] graduated with a medical degree.

The family association with the university continued with a fourth generation. My oldest brother Lawrence R. Williams* [71BS, 79PhD] received an advanced degree in anatomy, and I graduated with a degree in dental hygiene. Most of my cousins on the Remley side also graduated from the university, as did their children. This fifth generation to attend includes my son, Grant F. Zeimet, a UI mechanical engineering senior, who graduates in December.

I would guess that there has been a Remley to attend most every year that the University of Iowa has existed.
