Alumni and friends recently returned to campus to join in Iowa’s Homecoming festivities. Here are a few highlights of what proved to be a memorable week:

The College of Engineering continued its tradition of building a corn monument on the Pentacrest lawn, incorporating 300 pounds of kernels into an Iowa Wave-inspired stadium scene.

Sugar-high kids seeking sweets along the parade route found eye candy in the Hancher float. The pink wonderland of cupcakes and fantastical creatures provided a sneak preview of the April 6 production of American Ballet Theatre’s Whipped Cream.

Minneapolis-based hip-hop artist Lizzo pumped up the post-parade college crowd with a concert that combined flute-playing with high-energy dancing.
The Hawkeye Marching Band’s superhero-themed halftime show provided a heartfelt tribute to the strongest Hawkeyes we know: the Kid Captains. More than 100 families returned for the Kid Captain reunion, drawing emotional cheers from fans in the stadium.

Despite blustery conditions during the game, sophomore wide receiver Brandon Smith made a one-handed touchdown catch before halftime that led to Iowa’s 23-0 shutout victory over Maryland.
