Ever since the university's first official season in 1901-02, the cheers of basketball fans and the legacies of players and coaches have echoed in the rafters of the Field House and Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Through more than a century of winters in Iowa City, Hawkeye fans have enjoyed stunning victories and endured crushing defeats. Iowa's rich basketball history includes 22 NCAA tournament appearances, eight Big Ten regular season championships, three Final Fours, two Big Ten Tournament championships, and one NCAA Tournament national runner-up.
When Ed Rule became the first basketball coach at the University of Iowa, he wrote his first chapter in what would become one of the state's favorite pastimes. From humble beginnings in a small YMCA gymnasium, to the electrifying atmosphere of the national stage, these Hawkeyes on the hardwood have thrilled and inspired Iowa fans across the state and nation.
